After constructing the King Alexander's bridge, Zemun was physically and administratively joint to Belgrade in 1934, with an interruption between 1941 to 1944 while it was under German occupation. As of 1945, Zemun is a municipality of Belgrade.

In 2004, a part of Zemun municipality became the Surcin municipality.
