Zrnov was a medieval fort located in the highest part of Avala. The Romans erected a fortification where the Serbs later constructed a fortress which was expanded and strengthened in case of an attack on Belgrade. The remains of the fortification were torn down in 1934 and afterward a mausoleum was constructed in that location, named "The Monument to the Unknown hero".
