During WWII a teacher from Belgrade, Miladin Zaric, prevented the Germans from demolishing the old Sava bridge on 2oth of October 1944. He did so by cutting the detonator wires while the Germans were retreating. This heroic act has made this bridge the only one which Germans failed to destroy after they retreated. Zaric obtained a large number of Yugoslavian and foreign medals and honors for this act.
